Obesity Responsible for a Third of Heart Disease Deaths

Thu, 10 Dec 2009
Being overweight or obese is the common factor in a third of heart disease deaths, according to a study.

Research by The Netherlands Heart Foundation, involving 20,000 men and women aged 20 to 65, also shows excess weight is to blame for 70 per cent of cases of non-fatal heart disease .

Findings suggest that being overweight is a greater risk factor for cardiovascular disease than previously thought.

The study, based on BMI measurements, illustrated that obese patients are four times more likely to die of heart disease than those of normal weight.

Other studies suggest that obesity doubles the chances of dying from heart disease.

Being overweight and obesity have a great impact on cardiovascular disease, fatal or non-fatal.

The study has been published in the European Journal of Cardiovascular Prevention and Rehabilitation.
