Thousands of travellers who have a pre-existing medical condition and wish to go on holiday are unable to do so due to the exhorbitant cost of cover.
For many, this could mean making a clear choice between cancelling the holiday and staying at home, or taking the risk of travelling uninsured.
A survey by the Genetic Interest Group (GIG), a patient organisation, highlights that 41 per cent of its members found it "difficult" or "very difficult" to get travel insurance, while Which?, the consumer organisation, also reports that its members with medical conditions face problems or get "wildly differing" quotes.
According to Which?, one member has to cancel a three-week trip to America after being quoted between £596 and £2,008 for travel insurance cover . The hurdle was his well-managed depression and that he had to say "yes" on the online form to having consulted a psychiatrist, although it was 35 years ago.
