New research suggests that men over 50 are doubly twice likely to have undiagnosed Type 2 diabetes than women.
Published in the journal Diabetic Medicine, a nationally representative study of 6,739 52 to 79 year-olds uncovered 502 to have diabetes . Of the male diabetics, 22 per cent did not know they had the condition before the study, compared to 12 per cent of the women.
Diabetes is an exceedingly serious disease which gets more serious should it be left undiagnosed and untreated. Thus the diabetic is at greater the risk of developing devastating complications like stroke, blindness, heart disease, amputation and kidney failure.
About 50 per cent already have complications by the time of diagnosis.
Type 2 diabetes can remain undetected for a decade or more, meaning that about half of people already have complications by the time of diagnosis.
Men at more risk of Type 2 diabetes than women as men are usually worse at lookinug after their health than women.
Middle-aged men are twice as likely to have diabetes than women. More men are overweight than women and so at greater risk of Type 2 diabetes.
Research suggests that this pattern is the same for men over 50 who do not know they have diabetes.
It is crucial that men take better care of their health and are more informed about the risk factors and symptoms of diabetes. Older men, in particular, should they be at risk of diabetes, should have regular check-ups with their GP.
