Policy Pack Helps Schoolchildren with Illnesses

Mon, 30 Nov 2009
80 per cent of schools surveyed in England have created or amended their medical policies since receiving the 'Medical Conditions at School: Policy Pack' created jointly by Diabetes UK, Asthma UK, the Anaphylaxis Campaign and Epilepsy Action.

A survey of 300 schools highlighted that more than 75 per cent of respondents who had used the pack felt that it had already had a positive impact on pupils, staff and parents.

The pack helps schools to establish an overall policy to ensure school-wide measures are in place to protect the children's health vis-avis medical conditions, including helpful materials like templates for healthcare plans, staff training needs and out-of-school visit forms.

These four charities united to develop the policy pack in 2007 because Government legislation does not presently necessitate schools to have a specific medical policy in place which means that lots of schools do not have a policy whatsoever, or they have basic or improperly maintained policies.

More than 22,000 children and young people aged 17 and under have diabetes in England.

The more support they have the better.
