145,000 more people were diagnosed with diabetes in the UK in the last year.
There are presently more than 2.6 million diabetics in the UK and more than 5.2 million registered as obese .
This astoundingly means that a tenth of the UK population is being treated for obesity and one in 20 for diabetes.
Type 2 diabetes is frequently associated with lifestyle factors.
About 90 per cent of diabetics have Type 2 diabetes, which is frequently, but not always, related to lifestyle factors like being overweight or obese, having sedentary lifestyle and eating an unhealthy diet .
According to the International Diabetes Federation (IDF), worldwide 80 per cent of people with Type 2 diabetes are overweight or obese at the time of diagnosis.
These figures are of extreme concern.
Diabetes is a serious condition which causes stroke, heart disease, amputations, blindness and kidney failure. It causes more deaths than prostate cancer and breast cancer combined.
The majority of people with Type 2 diabetes are overweight or obese, therefore we need to do all we can to raise awareness of diabetes and help people understand how following a balanced diet and leading an active lifestyle can help lower their risk of developing Type 2 diabetes.
Should the increasing tides of obesity and diabetes not be stopped, millions will face a future of ill-health and an ever-growing strain on NHS resources.
