The charity, Diabetes UK, has published a recent recommendation whereby diabetics without a history of cardiovascular disease should speak to their healthcare team before taking aspirin to protect them from future heart disease .
Aspirin has safely been proven to lower the risk of CVD in people with diabetes who have a history of the diabetes complication.
This however not so for those without a history of CVD.
An increased risk of bleeding with aspirin is meant to outweigh its potential to protect against CVD in people without a history of CVD.
The diabetes charity, Diabetes UK recommends that people with diabetes without known cardiovascular disease should discuss their individual risk with their healthcare team.
People who do not have a history of cardiovascular disease and are already taking aspirin ought to continue to do so until they have discussed their individual circumstances with their healthcare team.
Diabetes UK recommends that aspirin should be offered to people with diabetes who already have a history of CVD.
CVD includes heart disease, strokes, /transient ischaemic-attack (TIA), as well as peripheral vascular disease.
