X Factor Winner Urges Young People to Join Diabetic Charity

Last year’s X Factor winner Alexandra Burke is calling on young people affected by diabetes to join a charity’s new campaigners network for under 18s.

The singer’s is in the process of launching My Voice, a charity which supports children and young people with diabetes in order to obtain their views in order that politicians and decision makers hear them.

Alexandra’s mother, Soul II Soul singer Melissa Bell, has Type 2 diabetes.

She has also been treated for kidney failure, which is a serious complication associated to diabetes, when Alexandra was singing in the final stages of ITV’s XFactor in 2008.

Alexandra is urging youngsters to join My Voice so they can unite to campaign on issues and challenges facing young diabetics .

The charity writes to local MPs, assits local schools to learn more about diabetes. Representatives also attend high profile events at the Houses of Parliament .

Alexandra who is 21 stated that she supports the My Voice campaigners network as she really believes that young people have the ability to make a difference.

Youngsters who sign up to My Voice can receive a letter from Alexandra as well as a free bag which contains a badge, stickers and information relating to campaigning. They also receive frequent updates, opportunities as well as ideas on how to get involved.

There are presently 20,000 plus children and young diabetics in the UK.

Diabetes impacts on 3 million plus people in the UK. Should it not be managed effectively, this condition can lead to illnesses like heart disease, kidney failure, strokes, blindness and amputation.
