New research higlights that a daily dose of a certain type of vitamin E can improve a liver disease, nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH).
Moreover, Actos (pioglitazone), a drug used for diabetes treatment, improves various features of NASH; however, it is associated with weight gain.
NASH is a chronic liver disease which is related to gaining weight and obesity and can lead to cirrhosis, or scarring, liver cancer and can be fatal.
It resembles alcoholic liver disease however it happens in patients who drink minimal or no alcohol.
NASH can affect children, older people, those of normal weight and non diabetic individuals.
The disease is considerd to be caused by abnormal metabolism of fats, transfering too much oxygen to the liver.
Vitamin E functions as an anti-oxidant while Actos improves the sensitivity of cells to insulin, a hormone which controls sugar and fat metabolism.
Vitamin E and Actos benefited certain patients with NASH. After 96 weeks of treatment, vitamin E improved all features of NASH apart from the degree of cirrhosis in the liver.
