Flights have resumed in Europe. However, that does not mean that the travel chaos is over.
Europe most busy airport, Paris' Charles de Gaulle Airport, reopened on Tuesday as air traffic across Europe started to come back to life.
Officials stated that it could take some weeks before all stranded travellers got home.
There were tears of joy as passengers wept with relief when their flights took off from Charles de Gaulle, Amsterdam and elsewhere.
British Airways said that it was expecting around 24 flights from the United States, Asia and Africa to land by early Wednesday.
Travellers were in jubilant mood as the first European flights took off, yet they were of course apprehensive about not meeting with any volcanic ash on their flights.
The Eurocontrol air traffic agency stated that it anticipated around 13,500 flights over Europe to go ahead on Wednesday, which is a huge improvement over the last few days.
The agency is forecasting more or less normal takeoffs by Friday.
