Parents Afraid of Childrens Hypoglycaemia Has Adverse Effect

Parents who are scared of their children experiencing hypoglycaemic episodes could have an adverse impact on the management of their child’s diabetes, according to recent research.

Hypoglycaemia, commonly known as ‘hypo’, happens when the glucose level in the blood drops too low.

Sound psychological support for both parents and children herein is critical.

The research, published in the journal Diabetic Medicine, discovered that the children of parents who displayed increased levels of emotional distress due to their their fear of their child having hypoglycaemia had higher blood glucose levels than others.

Diabetes is a serious condition with possible related long term condition, like stroke, heart disease, blindness, amputation and kidney disease .

The parents were also highly concerned about higher frequency of difficult hypoglycaemic episodes over the lasy twelve months.

The researchers from Bergen University College, Norway, monitored the progress of 200 parents of 115 children who are Type 1 diabetics, aged between 1 and 15 years.
