The way in which diabetics deal with diabetes related foot ulcers as well as their depression levels, impact upon how their wounds heal or worsen.
These are the findings of a study by a health psychologist at The University of Nottingham.
Healing rates were different for those who suffer from diabetes-related foot ulcers, given their coping mechanism and state of mind.
The study has brought about projects to develop psychological treatments to reduce depression in sufferers and help them cope more effectively with this serious condition.
Foot ulcers are open sores which occur when a minor skin injury does not heal due to microvascular and metabolic dysfunction due to the diabetic condition.
Around fifteen per cent of diabetics, both Type 1 and Type 2, develop foot or leg ulcers with many suffering depression and their quality of life worsens consequently.
