44 per cent of British adults are 'too busy' to undertake any exercise and two thirds are not undertaking the recommended 30 minutes a day of physical activity, so says a survey of 2,000 people.
Even though 75 per cent of respondents considered themselves to be healthy, 93 per cent stated that they had at least one unhealthy habit, such as, regularly eating takeaways, binge drinking, smoking or not eating sufficient fruit and vegetables .
The most adults are not achieving minimum activity levels which is important for keeping diabetes at bay as well as controlling and managing diabetes where it is already prevalent.
Diabetics have an increased risk of heart disease and stroke ; 30 minutes a day of physical activity helps manage this condition well. The spin off is that this also reduces their risk of long term complications related to diabetes. Physical activity also helps to lower the propensity of an individual to develop Type 2 diabetes .
Physical activity does not mean having to go to a gym . It can mean walking 30 minutes a day, around the block at home or near work. It can mean getting off the bus two stops earlier and walking the rest of the way; it can include walking up and down the stairs instead of taking the escalator.
The survey results were published by the British Heart Foundation.
