Tue, 23 Feb 2010

Stress increases the risk of memory loss among diabetics, according to new research.

Many diabetics suffer from memory problems.

But scientists have struggled to understand the reason behind the link before now.

The new research has discovered that high levels of a stress hormone called cortisol slowed down the functioning of the brain in diabetics .

The researchers at Edinburgh University stated that the breakthrough offers hope for new treatments for this condition.

The study was of 1,066 men and women aged 60 to 75 who were all suffering from Type 2 diabetes, the most common type of diabetes in adults, which has been related to lifestyle factors like obesity .

The study leaser confirmed: "We know that type 2 diabetes is linked to problems with memory, but the reason behind this is unclear.

"This study shows that older people with diabetes who have higher levels of stress hormones in their blood are more likely to have experienced cognitive decline.

"It may be that by regulating cortisol levels, we could help improve cognitive decline in patients with type 2 diabetes."

The team, funded by the Medical Research Council, is presently planning to investigate other factors which affect diabetics which could also be linked to memory loss.

There are presently more than 2.5 million people in Britain who have diabetes.

Experts believe that this figure will rise as levels of obesity increase.
