Diabetics in three London health trusts could be involved in a trial scheme whereby they are given money directly for serives to manage their diabetic condition.
A handful of Primary Care Trusts (PCTs) already exist as part of a pilot for personal health budgets, whereby diabetics select the complementary and support services they wish to use to help their diabetes management .
The direct payment project differs in that the money is passed directly to patients, as oppposed to it being held on their behalf by the PCT or another third party.
The Care Services Minister, Paul Burstow, stated that: "Direct payments, and personal health budgets more generally, have great potential to put patients in control, enable integration across health and social care and improve outcomes."
There are eight such direct payments pilot schemes throughout the UK, with diabetes care featuring in three London health trusts.
