India Launches Programme to Combat Diabetes

India has launched a new programme to combat cancer, diabetes and stroke .

This new programme is to diagnose, prevent and control the spread of cancer, diabetes, heart ailments and strokes .

The programme will be implemented in 100 districts across fifteen states via mass education as well as promotion of healthy lifestyle.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh decided to launch the National Programme for Prevention and Control of Cancer, Diabetes, Cardiovascular Diseases and Stroke which will also mean screening of individuals aged over 30 to identify their risk potential, establishment of properly-equipped diabetes clinics and community health centres.

70 million plus adults aged above 30 are likely to be screened for diabetes and hypertension .

World Health Organisation claims that, by 2020, cardiovascular diseases is going to be the biggest death and disability in India .

Diabetes affects approximately 6.25 percent of the population, with hypertension impacting on over 15 per cent.

Cancer and stroke affect around 2% of the population.
