Diabetes is said to be responsible a tenth of deaths from cardiovascular disease.

These findings have just been published in this week’s Lancet.

Researchers confirm that cardiovascular disease is the main cause of death internationally, responsible for approximately 17 million deaths annually, with diabetes having been recognised as a key risk factor for many years.

The new research into diabetes and cardiovascular disease involved reviewing studies of 700,000 people, monitored for over a decade in 102 surveys in 25 countries.

Within the industrialised countries researchers attributed about 325,000 cardiovascular deaths annually to diabetes.
