Recent research suggests that a low dose of GlaxoSmithKline's Avandia in conjunction with metformin can enable the prevention of diabetes without some of the less wholesome side-effects of the treatment.
This blend was found to lower the risk of patients going from high blood sugar to full type 2 diabetes by two thirds.
The usual side effects, fluid retention, weight gain and the gastrointestinal side-effects were missing.
Side-effects of the three drugs are known to be stomach upsets, fluid retention and weight gain, and, in extreme cases, heart failure.
The investigation monitored 207 patients for four years, ending before any heart attack risk could be measured.
