New research claims that children born to mothers with high blood sugar levels during pregnancy are more susceptible to low insulin sensitivity.
Experts consider that a drop in insulin sensitivity plays a crucial part of the metabolic disorder which is able to put kids on the path to obesity, high blood pressure, Type 2 Diabetes and heart disease when they are older.
The researchers found that children born to type 2 diabetic women or women with gestational diabetes, or women who have high blood sugar during pregnancy are at risk of becoming diabetic .
This study would appear to suggest that the childrens higher risk appears to be due partially due to their prenatal exposure to quite high maternal blood glucose levels.
The inability to respond to insulin comprises a key risk factor for type 2 diabetes.
Even though the most usual physical consequence of obesity is development of insulin resistance, the researchers noted that the lowered insulin sensitivity in the subjects was not related to the amount of fat in their body.
