The blueberry comes from the family as the blaeberry which is being studied to discover whether or not it has benefits for diabetes sufferers.

University of Aberdeen scientists are investigating whether or not a concentrated capsule form of the fruit could assist in the management of diabetes .

They are looking for 60 overweight men, aged 40 to 70 with type 2 diabetes, to participate in the three week long study.

The volunteers would need to be from the Aberdeen or Aberdeenshire area, and would need to take the capsule thrice a day.

Dr Nigel Hoggard, the study leader stated: "The exact link between type 2 diabetes and obesity has never been pinpointed."

"We think the answer to their connection lies in fat tissue. When fat increases, this is associated with a low grade inflammation, and the release of a number of hormones into the blood."

It is considered that a substance in blaeberries can lower the inflammation which occurs when fat increases.

All volunteers are going to be asked to take a concentrated form of the berry to test whether or not it assists in the reduction of inflammation related to increased fat tissue, thus improving their diabetic symptoms.

Volunteers have to be managing their diabetes by diet, as opposed to using insulin .

The blaeberry is also called the bilberry in certain areas of the UK.
