Almost two million Canadians are going to be diagnosed with diabetes in the next decade as the numbers of those overweight continues to increase, so says new research.
The study explored Canadian population trends in order to define how to prepare for a phenomenal increase in diabetes cases.
Its conclusions include that a tenth of Canadian adults, approximately, 1.9 million people, are going to develop this condition in the next decade and that public health authorities ought to begin to prepare for that glut immediately.
Those who are overweight are going to comprise 50 per cent of new diabetes diagnoses.
High levels of glucose in the bloodstream lead to Type 2 diabetes, often related to unhealthy diet and body mass . It is the sixth biggest fatal disease in Canada, taking around 8,000 lives per year.
Almost 13 million Canadian adults, or 61%, are considered to be obese or overweight, a considerable increase of 7 per cent since 2004..
In addition, 26% of Canadian children have an unhealthy body weight .
Many reasons are cited for increasing levels of obesity, including sedentary lifestyles as well as lots of high calorie and sugar laden foods, especially sugar-sweetened drinks, which some studies consider to be leading driver of obesity rates.
