Lack of Physical Activity is the Greatest Threat to Health

Tue, 30 Mar 2010
The lack of physical activity is the greatest threat to our nation's health .

70 per cent of UK adults do not undertake the recommended minimum amount of physical activity.

Child fitness is declining by 9 per cent each decade,

Donaldson used his annual report with regard to the state of public health to urge action to reverse the UK trend towards physical inactivity.

These actions will include the government undertaking a pilot of fitness assessments for each secondary school pupil, ensuring that minimum physical activity levels are incorporated within public health programmes, as well as carrying out further research into the best ways of increasing physical activity in different age groups.

Exercise is essential for good health. Should there be a medication which has a similar effect in terms of disease prevention, it would be called a miracle cure.

Research has shown that around 61 per cent of men and 71 per cent of women aged 16 plus failed to meet the minimum adult recommendation for physical activity.

Lack of exercise increases the risk of six plus chronic diseases, including diabetes and heart disease .

The state of children's health is of grave concern and is a situation very much needing to be reversed.
