Numbers of Scottish Diabetic Patients Contiue to Grow

New Scottish Diabetes Survey statistics highlight that 228,004 individuals currently have diabetes.

The increasing numbers of Type 2 diabetics account for the biggest element of the increase.

199,264 people in Scotland presently have Type 2 diabetes, up from 190,772 in 2008.

A strong factor for developing diabetes is being overweight or obese .

The findings suggest that more young people are developing diabetes at a younger age.

The number of Type 1 diabetics fell slightly from 27,464 in 2008 to 27,367. The number of Type 1 diabetics is increasing as is the number of those surviving Type 1 diabetes due to improved blood glucose control.

These figures are truly alarming. Some of this growth is due to an aging population.

However, the main cause for increasing numbers diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes is the expanding obesity crisis.
