Sanofi Broadens Healthcare Business for Diabetics

Wed, 31 Mar 2010
French drugmaker Sanofi-Aventis has diversified its healthcare business by agreeing to develop blood sugar monitoring systems with AgaMatrix, an American firm.

This move takes the group into the world of medical devices, decreasing its traditional reliance on branded prescription drugs.

Chief Executive, Viehbacher, stated that he is interested in specific areas of medical technology, including devices which enable patients to measure their health in their home.

As the company's vision is to become a healthcare company, it makes sense to consider such devices.

Sanofi and Aga-Matrix are going to co-develop blood glucose monitoring devices which can simplify insulin therapy management, a market which Sanofi already leads with such insulin drugs as Lantus and Apidra.

It is said that Sanofi is going to start selling the first partnership products in the second half of 2010.

Global pharmaceutical companies are focusing heavily on diabetes due to the increase in cases of this disease worldwide and its association with obesity .
