Diabetics at Higher Risk of Atrial Fibrillation

Thu, 20 May 2010
Atrial Fibrallation refers to the rapid uncoordinated contractions of the heart's atria which produces inadequate synchronicity between a heartbeat and a pulse beat.

Diabetics with poorly managed diabetes are doubly at risk of this.

Even diabetics with properly controlled diabetes are at increased risk in the long term.

Diabetics receiving treatment for diabetes had a 40% higher risk of developing atrial fibrillation than others who do not suffer from this chronic disease, after adjusting for body mass index and other factors, so says a study in the Journal of General Internal Medicine.

Risk of arrhythmia, irregular heartbeat, affects around 2.2 million Americans. This figure increased each additional year a patient is treated for diabetes.

Atrial fibrillation is commonly experiencedit and can be very dangerous. More research is needed into a diabetic's blood sugar control in order to reduce the risk of atrial fibrillation within the American population.
