The UK's largest drug manufacturer, GlaxoSmithKline Plc, has agreed to settle 700 plus lawsuits related to a diabetes drug, at a cost of approximately £39.2m.
The lawsuits allege that Glaxo's Avandia diabetes drug can cause certain patients to have heart attacks and strokes.
Three attorneys have brought the 700 settlements, when the company is facing 4,000 lawsuits as well as a trial in Philadelphia with regard to the drug.
Glaxo officals have refused to comment, with the company preparing for trials, which are set to occur later in 2010.
Officials have argued that users of the drug who have had heart attacks are not able to link them to the drug, adding that all users are warned of the risks.
Avandia went on sale in the USA upon being approved by regulators in 1999. It is currently being reviewed by the Food and Drug Administration, which will present findings to an advisory committee in July 2010.
