Processed red meat like bacon‚ hot dogs and salami can increase the risk of diabetes and heart disease‚ so say researchers from the Harvard School of Public Health .

The researchers conducted a study review of 20 research studies which examined the relationship between red meat‚ processed meat‚ and total meat consumption as well as stroke, heart disease and diabetes . The studies crosses 1.2 million participants from ten countries.

The participants were monitored for 18 years.

Overall, 23‚000 study participants developed heart disease‚ 2‚200 had strokes‚ and 10‚000 were diabetics .

Eating unprocessed red meat was was not linked to diabetes or heart disease . Whereas, those who ate a minimum of one daily serving of processed red meat were 42 percent more likely to develop heart disease and 19 percent more likely to develop diabetes than those who did not have processed red meat within their diet .

Dietary intake of processed and unprocessed meat was related to a 12 percent increase in the risk of diabetes in contrast to non–meat eaters. It is considered that salt and preservatives like nitrites could account for this higher risk.
