Working Too Many Hours Increases Likelihood of Heart Disease

Tue, 18 May 2010
A new British Heart Journal study says that those who work three or four hours overtime on a daily basis increase their risk of heart disease by 60 per cent.

Doctors studied 370 cases of those who had fatal heart disease, heart attacks or angina. All of the cases appeared to be strongly associated with the number of hours spent working overtime.

By default, should you be working more hours, you have less time to relax, unwind and exercise . You can also become more stressed, depressed and anxious.

Further research is of course needed into this area. However, it is crucial for individuals to be active at work for good health by keeping fit and reducing their stress levels.

Exercise benefits weight management which lowers an individual's likelihood of developing Type 2 diabetes as well as lowering the risk of a heart attack or stroke.

For diabetics, it is also imperative to keep active in order to improve diabetes control and prevent certain complications of diabetes.

A few easy ways of looking after your health at work are taking the stairs as opposed to the lift, walking over to see a colleague personally as opposed to talking to them on the phone, walking at lunch time and snacking on fruit as opposed to biscuits.
