Traveling is a reason for diabetics to examine their feet thoroughly.
You should not be put off travelling if you are a diabetic; you just need to pay specific attention to your feet pre, during and post travel.
Travelling could mean long walks and spending a great deal of time in an upright position which can increase the likelihood of problems with your feet.
As a diabetic traveller it is imperative to take with you two to three pairs of comfortable, well-fitting shoes on your journey if you need to change due to blisters or painful pressure points. Wear dress shoes or heels only when absolutely necessary.
Also take with you several pairs of cushioned socks to protect pressure points which can cause problems. They ought to be made of natural fibres, such as, cotton or wool, to keep humidity at bay from the skin and protect feet against fungal infections .
If the weather is cold weather, wear shoes or, boots and socks to keep your feet warm. Do not stay outdoors for too long in order to problems of circulation in the legs and feet.
In warm weather, ensure your feet are protected always when walking near swimming pools, in parks, as well as at the beach. Walking barefoot is unwise as you increase your risk of injuries and cuts broken glass, stones, seashells, burning cigarettes and so on.
Do not use open shoes and sandals as they expose the toes and increase the risk of injury and possible infection .
