Diabetes Soars in the USA

Fri, 22 Oct 2010
Diabetes is soaring in the USA. This is due to an ageing population developing type 2 diabetes, diabetics longevity, as well the increase of the disease amongst minority groups, who appear to be more susceptible to the disease.

It is forecast that there are going to be 15 new cases of diabetes per 1000 people, nearly double the eight new cases per 1000 found in 2008.

Certain minority groups like African-Americans, American Indians, Alaska Natives, Hispanics and certain Asian-Americans and Pacific Islanders are more susceptible to Type 2 diabetes due to other factors such as, family history of diabetes, older age, obesity and a sedentary lifestyle.

The International Diabetes Federation estimate that there will be 285 million people affected by diabetes in 2010, with the figure estimated at rise to 438 million by 2050.

Recent research suggests that maintaining a healthy lifestyle by remaining physically active and eating healthily can reduce the risk of developing diabetes by 58% over a three year period.
