Mon, 06 Sep 2010
Thousands of Wearsiders are considered to have undiagnosed Type 2 diabetes which places them at risk of "devastating" health problems.

Diabetes UK, the leading diabetes charity, has stated that around 4,900 people in Sunderland, a third of the diabetic population, are suffering from the condition, which they are unaware of.

You can have Type 2 diabetes for up to 10 years without knowing it, with around 50 per cent of individuals only showing signs of complications upon diagnosis.

Approximatey 12,000 people in Sunderland have been diagnosed with diabetes; many others may have the condition without being aware of it.

It is essential for the condition to be diagnosed as early as possible, in order that treatment for ood control of diabetes is introduced as early as possible.

Should you have any symptoms of diabetes, like passing urine more frequently than usual, increased thirst, fatigue or inexplicable weight loss, you need to contact your GP immediately.
