New medication could limit kidney damage in individuals with type 2 diabetes .

A new medication developed by University of California researchers, San Diego could enhance kidney function in type 2 diabetics and improve kidney functioning for those with kidney disease . This could enable them to avoid end-stage renal disease .

Diabetic nephropathy is the main cause of end-stage renal disease in America.

Once the individual develops this condition, their damaged kidneys are not capable of removing waste from the bloodstream. The patient becomes dependent on dialysis for the rest of their lives or upto when a transplant is available. Nephropathy is a more common complication of diabetes .

The new medication, pirfenidone significantly slows down the progression of kidney damage and prevents many patients from progressing to end-stage renal disease.
