24,000 Deaths Related to Diabetes could be Avoided Each Year

Thu, 15 Dec 2011
24,000 diabetic deaths could be avoided each year if those diabetics received the appropriate healthcare or were informed as to how to manage their condition effectively.

These are the latest findings of a government-commissioned report.

The alarming figure represents the first estimate of diabetes related deaths due to inadequate health checks, not taking medication at the right time and not pertaining to a healthy lifestyle.

Any or all these factors have increased their risk of dangerously high blood sugar levels or dangerously low blood sugar levels, heart failure or kidney problems.

75 per cent of the 24,000 deaths are amongst the 65 plusses. Young diabetics are at risk too, two young people aged between 15 and 34 in England are considered to be dying per week as a result.
