Diabetes management can be difficult when you are on holiday as your schedule changes dramatically.
Here are some dietary tips for diabetics whilst on holiday.
Control your portion sizes. As a diabetic you can enjoy the majority of holiday foods, however, keep your portion sizes reasonable.
Ensure you eat plenty of fruit and veg as it is vital for us all, not just for those who have diabetes. Make sure you have some fruit and veg to snack on at hand so you are not tempted to reach for biscuits, sweets and chocolates. Include lots of leafy salads in to the mix too; for flavour you can add a variety of dressings.
When cooking keep it simple, try not to add heavy, high fat sauces or lots of cheese to foods for flavour; opt for herbs, spices and simple seasonings.
Check your blood glucose levels more frequently than you do back home. Should it be too high, go for a walk or engage in another activity. You are likely to feel much better afterwards.
