Diabetes Research Indicates that Life Takes a Tumble at 41

Tue, 14 Jun 2011
Most of us think that life begins again at 40. However, recent research indicates that 41 is when we actually let ourselves go.

At 41, most of us start to eat too much, pile on the pounds and reduce the level of exercise we undertake daily which raises our likelihood of developing diabetes .

The survey marks the launch of Diabetes Week and many thousands of people stated that they would love to go back in time. Over 30 per cent of participants aged over 40 thought that they had let themselves go, with one third stating that if they could turn the clocks back they would not have permitted themselves to become overweight .

One hundred thousand plus people are diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes eachy year in the UK, which equates to 275 new cases on a daily basis or one every five minutes.

Diabetes is evidently one of the biggest threats to the nation's health, yet 42 per cent of respondents stated that they do not understand what Type 2 diabetes is and a quarter were not able to name a single complication related to the disease, such as, heart disease, blindness or amupations .

Lloydspharmacy launched its ‘Diabetes, are you at risk?’ campaign which aims to help the public to recognise the risk factors assocaited with the development of Type 2 diabetes .
