Insomnia and High Insulin Resistance Link Found Amongst Diabetics

Diabetics who have trouble sleeping are likely to experience high insulin resistance . They also find it more difficult to control their condition.

Recent research explored the sleeping habits of 40 diabetics for six nights; the subjects' insulin and glucose levels were also monitored during clinical examinations.

The subjects stated that they had on the whole suffered snoring, insomnia or sleep apnoea .

Amongst the diabetics, poor sleepers experienced 23% higher blood glucose levels in the morning and 48% experienced higher blood insulin levels.

Using these figures to estimate an individual's insulin resistance, the researchers discovered that poor sleepers with diabetes experienced an 82% higher insulin resistance than normal diabetic sleepers.

Poor sleep quality in diabetics is relates to worse control of blood glucose levels. Those who have trouble controlling their blood-glucose levels are at and increased risk of complications, a lesser quality of life and lower life expectancy.
