Pre Emptive Pills to be Given Pregnant Mums to Keep Diabetes at Bay

Tue, 10 May 2011
Overweight, pregnant women in Coventry are going to be given drugs on a daily basis to prevent them having obese babies.

Pregnant women are going to be advised to take the diabetes pill up to three time a day.

The NHS trial is trying to restrict the food supply to the foetus in the womb, cutting down sugars and other nutrients absorbed.

Doctors involved in this project have warned about obesity amongst pregnant women and how they are at epidemic proportions and how important it is to protect the health of future generations of Coventry children.

Adult obesity originates in the womb, triggering higher birth-weights and adult obesity.

Many doctors consider that lots of overweight adults start their problems in the womb, when the foetus absorbs too many sugars and fats due to the high levels of insulin in the mother’s blood.

The drug Metformin lowers blood sugar and insulin levels in the mother’s blood, which means that the baby is less likely to absorb excess fat and be born overweight.
