Recent research has shown that diabetes can result in memory loss, depression and other kinds of cognitive impairment in older adults.
An Israeli study has discovered that in older diabetics two adhesion molecules, sVCAM and sICAM, trigger inflammation in the brain, leading to various events which affect blood vessels and, in the end cause brain tissue to atrophy.
The key functions including decision-making, verbal memory, language and complex tasks are the most impacted by these events.
Previous research has also uncovered that diabetics experienced more brain atrophy than the control group did.
After the age of 65, the average individual's brain shrinks around one percent per annum. However, in the case of a diabetic person, brain volume can shrink up to 15 per cent.
