Diabetes in UK Increases by 50 Per Cent in 5 Years

The number of diabetics in the UK has increased by 50 per cent in only five years, due to high levels of obesity .

There are almost three million adult and child diabetics, with an increase of 117,000 plus in the last 12 months alone.

The Diabetes UK charity highlights that the NHS spends £9billion per annum treating patients, that is, nearly a tenth of its budget.

Scientists consider that excess fat interrupts the working of insulin, a main hormone which delivers sugar to cells; this can trigger type 2 diabetes .

Around 90 per cent of diabetics have type 2 diabetes, which may be caused by being obese or overweight .

The remaining 10 per cent or so have type 1 diabetes, which is considered to be genetic.

A report published earlier this year stated that an increasing number of children are being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, whereas, previously this type of diabetes mainly affected adults.
