Link Between Diabetes and Heart Wellbeing

Mon, 14 Nov 2011
A lot of diabetics and non diabetics may wonder what the connection between diabetes and heart disease is.

Diabetics are doubly likely to suffer from heart disease in contrast to their non diabetic counterparts.

They are also more likely to develop heart disease younger. Serious cardiovascular disease can start pre 30 in diabetics.

The likelihood of a middle aged diabetic getting a heart attack is the same as an individual who has already had a heart attack before.

Women who have not had the menopause are at a lower risk of heart attacks in comparison to their same age male counterparts, an advantage which is nullified should they be diabetic .

So what causes heart disease in diabetics? Diabetics undergo changes in blood vessels which include thickening of the lumen and formation of plaques. Diabetics also get lipid abnormalities and their blood is more likely to clot due to high fibrinogen or plasminogen activator inhibitor levels in blood, resulting in blood supply blockage leading to heart attacks .
