Diabetes Rising in Ireland

More than 4,000 adults are registered diabetic in Londonderry today, whereas, 2006 saw just 209 adults being diagnosed with diabetes in the city.

Diabetes is an auto immune condition which can lead to complications like heart disease, kidney disease, stroke, amputation and blindness .

The most recent Diabetes UK Northern Ireland statistics highlight that there has been a huge increase of 32 per cent in the number of diabetics since 2006.

Northern Ireland experienced a five per cent increase in diabetics on 2010 figures, with 72,693 adults presently having been diagnosed with diabetes, of whom 62,000 have Type 2 diabetes .

Diabetes treatment and treatment of associated complications presently costs the NHS in Northern Ireland approximately £400m per annum, 10 per cent of its annual budget.

It is vital that this trend is reversed for the overall and specific health of the nation.
