Increased Diabetes Rates Amongst Mentally Ill

Individuals who have mental health problems are more susceptible to developing diabetes, especially type 2 diabetes .

New research has discovered that detecting this condition is low amongst the Irish mental health service users.

Diabetes is a key health concern, for the general public, as well as for smaller groups of people, in particular those with mental health problems.

Those who have mental health issues are 2.5 times more likely to die due to heart disease in contrast to the general population.

Other research also highlights that those with mental health issues die up to 15 years before their counterparts.

Diabetes is increasing at an alarming rate, particularly type 2 diabetes .

It is a huge issue amongst those who do not have specific mental health issues.

However, those who have mental health issues are at a higher risk of diabetes than the general population.
