A pill which can treat or prevent type 2 diabetes may be on the market soon.

A study of diabetic mice has discovered a compound, which when produced naturally in their bodies, successfully restored their normal blood sugar levels .

Researchers consider that this may lead to diabetics being able to take this compound like a daily vitamin to prevent the development of diabetes.

There are more than two million diabetics in the UK; the condition is related to several lifestyle factors, such as, excess alcohol, smoking, excess weight and lack of exercise .

These findings would have an immense impact on the UK where there are approximately 2.5million type 2 diabetics .

The compound, nicotinamide mononucleotide (NMN), is crucial to the way in which cells utilise energy.

American scientists normalised blood sugar levels in diabetic mice by injecting this chemical into them.

The injection also reduced high levels of cholesterol and triglyceride blood fats.
