Almonds Benefit those with Type 2 Diabetes

There are almost 26 million American adults and children who are type 2 diabetics at present.

By 2025, type 2 diabetes is forecast to affect 438 million people across the world, that is, it will affect nearly 8 per cent of the global adult population.

A key first step in diabetes management is changes in our diets, which has been highlighted in two recently published studies.

Both studies recommend almonds in our diet as aiding individuals with type 2 diabetes to maintain their cholesterol and blood glucose levels.

The first study considered the impact of almonds on metabolism, highlighting that eating an ounce of almonds before a high-starch test meal demonstrated a 30% decrease of post-meal glucose levels (P= .043) in participating type 2 diabetics and a 7% decrease in participating non diabetics (P= .638).

A fortnight later participants were randomly divided into groups to have a test meal with or without almonds. The results emphasised that the inclusion of almonds in a test meal lowered blood sugar levels post meal in those who had type 2 diabetes.
