An increasing number of diabetics are being severely affected by kidney disease in Australia.
There has been a surge in chronic kidney disease and in its treatment via dialysis or kidney transplants.
The total number of Australians who will need to be treated for end-stage kidney disease is predicted to increase by up to 80 per cent to approximately 4,300 in the next decade.
The Australian population is getting older and expanding which means that end-stage kidney disease is going to affect more people, with the number of diabetics with this condition also expected to increase.
The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare has stated that it expects the percentage of diabetics undergoing transplants or dialysis to increase from 45 per cent in 2009 to 64 per cent in 2020.
This prediction has led to federal government giving GPs extra incentives to undertake more exhaustive checks for kidney disease in those who have diabetes.
