Diabetes Treatment Costs GBP27 Million in Cornwall

Mon, 19 Sep 2011
Diabetes treatment in Cornwall has increased by around 25% in the last four years to more than £7m.

This means that the cost of treating this chronic condition is almost 8.4% of the drugs' budget for Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly.

Cornwall and Isles of Scilly NHS affirms that around 85% of diabetics have weight-related Type 2 diabetes.

Type 2 diabetes, which is often preventable, is increasing every year.

Type 1 diabetes happens as a result of an autoimmune disorder, while Type 2 diabetes is related to being an unhealthy weight, due often to inactivity and an unhealthy diet.

Health experts have expressed specific concern about future risks due to the increasing number of obese children.

It is imperative that the public understand and appreciate that sticking to a healthy diet and lifestyle is not difficult. As the old adage goes, prevention is better than a cure.

A healthy diet and frequent exercise need to be embraced as opposed to being viewed as a task.

The Western diet, high in fat and sugar, is spurring on the hike in obesity and subsequent Type 2 diabetes.

A surprising 31% of local adult diabetics were measured in the past year and were found to have a body mass index of more than 30.
