Diabetics More Likely to Develop Colon Cancer

A brand new study links diabetes with colon cancer.

Researchers are not able to pinpoint the key cause for this. However, they do affirm that there is a link.

The combined results of 14 studies highlighted that diabetics are 38% more likely to develop colon cancer in contrast to non diabetics . Diabetic men are 20 per cent more likely to have a rectal cancer diagnosis.

The researchers made adjustments for factors, such as, age, smoking and obesity.

Dr. Edward Giovannucci, from the Harvard School of Public Health, confirmed the association between diabetes and colorectal cancer.

The cause and effect aspect has not been specified as diabetes is such a complex condition.

Diabetics have high levels of the hormone insulin and hormones related to insulin -like growth factors. These hormones trigger cell growth and these cells could be cancerous.

It is vital that diabetics are regularly screened for colon cancer and rectal cancer .
