Diabetics Urged to Get Feet Checked

25 per cent of diabetics in Scotland are at a higher risk of amputation should they not get their feet checked out.

Diabetes UK Scotland stated that foot problems can lead to more serious complications should diabetics fail to have their annual foot checks.

The charity asserts that there presently 10,292 diabetics in Scotland who already have ulcers due to not having had regular feet check ups.

2010 saw 11,293 people with Type 1 diabetes and 45,665 with Type 2 diabetes not having their feet checked for potential problems.

Diabetes UK Scotland stated that the health of diabetics is put at risk by missing out on various health checks and specialist services.

Feet screening is just one of a checklist of 15 recommendations to assist the public in being aware of what services are available to enable them to manage their condition better, which also including eye and kidney tests.

Diabetes UK Scotland confirmed that 10,000 plus people in Scotland have present problems with their feet and 1,200 individuals have lost a lower limb.

It is vital for the public to receive the best possible care to prevent loss of limbs.
