Tue, 13 Sep 2011
Eli Lilly and Co is going to spend $30 million in the next five years to discover improved ways to fight diabetes in developing nations

It is an immense outlay for the Indianapolis drug maker on diabetes treatment programs in non-Western countries.

The company will also sponsor a conference on non communicable diseases in order to fight the increase in diabetes and cancer amongst other non-communicable diseases in developing nations.

Lilly was party to developing the first U.S. commercial insulin for diabetes in the 1920s and has continued to be leader in insulin production and insulin sales since.

Lilly is planning to target the expenditure in India, Mexico, Brazil and South Africa, where diabetes rates have gone from 4.5 per cent to 10 per cent.

The company is already working in hospitals and health foundations in these four countries to identify better models of patient care and diabetes treatments.
