Rise in Strokes in Teenagers Due Partly to Diabetes

Tue, 06 Sep 2011
A study conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has uncovered that stroke hospitalisation rates in adolescents and young adults in America aged between 15 and 44 went up to 37 per cent between 1995 and 2008.

The study found that there has been a surge in diabetes, lipid disorders, obesity and use of tobacco amongst this age group over the 14 year duration of this study.

Furthermore, nearly a third of patients aged between 15 and 34 years and over half of that same age group were also diagnosed with hypertension.

A stroke can occur at any time to anyone, regardless of age. Strokes are often associated with older people however, 25 per cent of all strokes occur to those of working age, with approximately 400 children per annum having a stroke in the UK.

High blood pressure is the key risk factor for strokes, as well as diabetes, obesity, smoking and a poor diet .

This research highlights that we all need to be aware that strokes can impact younger people and that it is vital for everyone, irrespective of age, to check their blood pressure and lead a healthy lifestyle.
