New research has found a link between four new genes which increase the risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
The research has been published in the American Journal of Human Genetics; it explored genetic variants in 2,000 genes related to cardiac and metabolic function.
The data was from many studies involving 17,000 type 2 diabetics and 70,000 non diabetics . This makes this study the biggest combined study of genetic factors related to type 2 diabetes hitherto. The participants were from multi-ethnic backgrounds.
Therefore, the new genes identified as possibly having a possible role to play in increasing the risk of diabetes could be more relevant for various ethnic groups than their European counterparts.
The results provide invaluable insight as to the genetic risk for type 2 diabetes in multiple ethnic groups and this may aid new diabetes treatments .
